This work provides a new look at communication on the European Union based on a study framed in the first level of the theory of the Agenda Setting. It presents the results of a field analysis of the media agenda, which covers September 2013 to December 2014 and therefore includes the European elections of 2014.

The results of the analysis of the four Spanish media studied (El País, El Mundo, TVE and Telecinco) are very relevant, as they reveal new data on the way the Spanish media talk about the European Union. As an example, the results show that the European information was largely based on national sources and was mostly written by journalists who were not the correspondents in Brussels. It is also noteworthy that when the media covered the European Union, in most cases they did not focus on matters in which the Union had the most intense competence. It also highlights the difference between the media when it comes to reporting on the European institutions.

In order to analyse these data in context, the book provides a detailed structural study of the circumstances that led the media to select specific topics. Likewise, it describes the communication model of the European institutions, making structural and pragmatic proposals for its improvement.

This work is part of the project 'What Europe do you want', which has been developed by the University Institute of European Studies at the CEU San Pablo University with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation.
