Within the framework of its general objectives, the main research areas of the Royal University Institute of European Studies are:
- Integration and legal and institutional development of the European Union
Analysis of the evolution of the European integration process from its legal and institutional foundations, with attention to the functioning of the EU institutions, the development of its legal system and the mechanisms of cooperation between Member States in the face of current governance challenges. - Christian foundations and values of Europe
Academic reflection on the Christian roots of Europe as a constituent element of its cultural, political and legal identity, and on its relevance for addressing contemporary debates on values, coexistence and the future of the European project. - Competition Law and Regulation in the European market
Specialized research -developed through the CPCR- on competition law and policy in the single market: merger control, state aid, sectoral regulation and enforcement of competition rules by European authorities and institutions. - External Relations of the European Union
Study of the EU’s external action, its diplomatic instruments and its relations with third countries and multilateral organizations, focusing on its role as a normative and political actor in a changing international order. - International Arbitration
Through CIAMEN, this area deals with the study and practice of alternative dispute resolution methods in the international arena: commercial and investment arbitration, mediation and negotiation in national and international forums. - Geopolitics, Security and Defense
Analysis of the major power balances and their impact on Europe’s stability and strategic autonomy, with a focus on regional conflicts, tensions between powers and the European Union’s security and defense policies.
